Bloodroot

Bloodroot
Sanguinaria Canadensis
You'll never guess how Bloodroot got its name!  Go on, take a guess...  Ok, I'll tell you.  It's because the sap in its roots is red!!  How about that!  A name that actually describes the plant.  Woohoo!

It's such a nice shade of red that it has been used for face painting ever since the time of the Native Americans.  So, go ahead and give it a try.  Don't ingest it however.  It is rather toxic.

Bloodroot plants have all of one leaf
The leaf starts out enfolding the flowering stem, then opens up
