Sweetgum

Sweetgum
Liquidambar styraciflua
Sweetgum can be tapped like a maple tree.  The sap is resinous and will solidify like chewing gum.  You can chew it like gum, but people say that it's not very sweet.  It's just not as bad as Blackgum, therefore it's Sweetgum.

It's native to southern Indiana, but is planted widely because it's a cool looking tree.  My neighbor has one in his yard.  I wonder if he'd let me tap it?
The pods are quite distinctive. You wouldn't want to walk barefoot around the tree!

The twigs often have these weird "wings" on them
