Eastern Redcedar

Eastern Redcedar
Juniperus virginiana
This is a very common plant in Indiana, particularly in open fields that are not "managed". They sprout up from seeds that have been pooped by birds that eat the berries, so they are widely dispersed.

During my google research, I found several sites that said that this was not a "True" Cedar, but rather a Juniper. Apparently, "True" Cedars are only to be found in the Cedrus genus and nowhere else. So, who decided which ones are "True" and which ones merely stole the name?
