Common Sneezeweed
Helenium autumnale
|
You might think that the common name of Sneezeweed refers to this plants allergic reaction capabilities, but you would be incorrect. Sneezeweed does bloom late in the year, at about the same time as Ragweed and some other allergens, but it is pollinated by insects rather than the wind and it wouldn't cause much sneezing.
Actually, the dried disk florets were powdered and used as a snuff to treat colds and headaches and from that comes the common name. I doubt that it's used for that purpose much anymore.
