Pale Purple Coneflower

Pale Purple Coneflower
Echinacea pallida

There are two Echinacea species in Indiana, this one and E. purpurea, the Eastern Purple Coneflower. This plant occurs naturally in the prairies of the very northwest part of the state, although it is planted in prairie restorations throughout the state. The Eastern Purple Coneflower is probably more commonly planted throughout the state, especially in gardens, particularly butterfly and native gardens.

Pale Purple Coneflower has thinner petals and leaves than Eastern Purple and the leaves grow mostly on the lower part of the stem, allowing the flower the exclusive right to shoot up over the surrounding vegetation to look for pollinators.
