Pennsylvania Smartweed

Pennsylvania Smartweed
Polygonum pensylvanicum
Pennsylvania Smartweed is a common native plant to Indiana.  So common that most people don't think much of it.  On the other hand, the critters love it.  All sorts of invertebrates utilize all parts of the plant, and many birds and rodents eat the seeds.  Even turtles eat various parts of the plant.  Go Pennsylvania Smartweed!

The leaf is similar to Lady's Thumb, but without the thumbprint
The sheath at the base of the leaf is called the ocrea. For this plant, note that the ocrea does not have a fringe of little hairs around it.
The small flowers are pretty up close
