Lizard's Tail

Lizard's Tail
Saururus cernuus

I like this plant because it keeps the Lizard theme all through its family tree. Saur or sauros is Greek for lizard, thus the genus name is Saururus. The family name is Saururaceae, also referring to Lizard.

I'm not sure why the taxonomists get such a strong feeling about lizards when they name this plant, but I like it.

It seems to be an unusual plant, but probably because it likes to grow in shallow water or very wet soil that is hard to get to. Some of these pictures were taken by canoe! It is very impressive to see a bunch of it growing along a lake edge.
