Indianhemp

Indianhemp
Apocynum cannabinum

Guess why this plant is named Indianhemp?  Ok, it's because the Indians used it as a fiber plant, similar to the hemp plant.  Actually there are dozens of plants with the word Indian as part of their common name.  Clearly the early namers of plants learned a lot from the Native Americans, which were known as Indians at the time.

Another, perhaps more common, name for this plant is Dogbane.

Typical leaves
This version of the plant used to be called Clasping-leaved Dogbane, Apocynum sibiricum
Small white flowers
Long, cool-looking pods
