Cornsalad is a peculiar name for this plant ... any plant as far as that goes.  It turns out that another plant in this genus, Valerianella locusta, is a European plant that has been used for centuries in salads.  The French in particular cultivate that plant.  'Corn' is a generic term for any grain in England, and this plant tends to grow as a weed in wheat fields, thus "Cornsalad".  Now you know something useful!
